Nintendo confirmed the iconic pair’s relationship status via an update in the Nintendo Today app. Although the post has since been cleared because of a new batch of updates, a screenshot was shared by X (formerly Twitter) user @KirPinkFury and the news has been making waves around the internet.
The update read, "Princess Peach and Mario are good friends and help each other out whenever they can."
Mario and Peach have gone together like peanut butter and jelly since Mario discovered that the princess was in another castle over and over again in 1985’s Super Mario Bros. Now, after 40 years of rescues, cheek kisses, and baked cakes, Nintendo has decided to step in to insist that the pair are, and have always been, platonic.
This news isn’t likely to dramatically affect upcoming game titles featuring the Brooklyn-based plumber and the Mushroom Kingdom princess. It’s not like the pair ever behaved overtly romantic with each other to begin with. It’s just interesting how such a casual and straightforward revelation can impact decades of head lore for some fans.
