Sucker Punch took over today’s State of Play to showcase gameplay from Ghost of Yōtei, the follow-up to their 2020 hit, Ghost of Tsushima. The broadcast gave fans a look at the game’s combat, exploration, and they revealed special PlayStation 5 console bundles that’ll be available when the game launches on October 2.
Right off, Sucker Punch emphasized that player freedom and gameplay personalization is an important aspect of the Ghost of Yōtei experience. From weapon selection–including dual katanas, ōdachi, and kusarigama, the three new additions to the series–to the game’s new clue system, players are encouraged to play the game how they want, and at the pace they want.
The clue system, in particular, is designed to ensure players encounter more of the sort of gameplay they crave. The game’s heroin, Atsu, interrogates conquered foes and players select clue cards that lead them to more exciting combat, stealth scenarios, world exploration–whatever piques the player’s interest. And while the clue system is certainly one of the ways in which players can move from one adventure to the next, Sucker Punch says there’s no need for clues or any other formal quest-invitation system to be their guiding light.
“Ghost of Yōtei isn’t going to rush you through anything,” Sucker Punch explained. “You can choose what motivates you most. But we think the best way to play is to simply pull out your spyglass, find something interesting on the horizon, and enjoy the ride.”
The State of Play concluded with the announcement of two PS5 Ghost of Yōtei Limited Edition bundles.
There’s the Ghost of Yōtei Gold Limited Edition Bundle that will be available wherever consoles are sold and inspired by the Japanese art form of kinsugi. The Ghost of Yōtei Black Limited Edition Bundle will be available exclusively on PlayStation Direct, its aesthetic inspired from Sumi-e, a Japanese traditional art form that involves black ink on paintings. Both bundled consoles feature Mt. Yōtei, a symbol of Ezo (or Hokkaido in modern times), the setting of Atsu’s revenge story. The included DuelSense controllers depict Atsu herself.
If you’re not interested in purchasing a limited edition bundle, no worries. The Ghost of Yōtei console plates and controllers will be sold separately.
This is just a quick look at today’s Ghost of Yōtei State of Play. Sucker Punch also provided details on the game’s unique modes, a bounty system Atsu can participate in, armor customization, the camping feature that allows for rest and helpful ally encounters, and much more.
