Final Fantasy Tactics – The Ivalice Chronicles announced during today’s State of Play

Today’s State of Play had its share of surprises, and one of the biggest came from Square Enix. After years of fan requests for a remake of the 1997 classic Final Fantasy Tactics, the legendary game publisher and developer is finally delivering Final Fantasy Tactics – The Ivalice Chronicles

Releasing this year on September 30, Final Fantasy Tactics – The Ivalice Chronicles allows players to experience this iconic Final Fantasy adventure in two distinct ways. You’ll be able to play the enhanced version, which includes many modern upgrades you’d expect from a remake. Or, for those craving nostalgia, there’s the classic version. This is Tactics in its near-original form, albeit with some system upgrades–such as an auto-save feature–intended to enhance the overall experience.

In the enhanced version, players can enjoy updated visuals, full voice acting, an all-new tactical view for improved strategizing, customizable battle speeds, and new difficulty levels to test player skills.

And while these enhancements freshen up the player experience in 2025, The Ivalice Chronicles rightfully brings back the tactical turn-based combat adored by longtime fans. Players take the role of Ramza, the third son of House Beoulve and a significant cog in the game's epic war narrative and gameplay that features the tried and true Tactics jobs system. Players can assign more than 20 jobs or roles to their allies on the battlefield, including several classic Final Fantasy jobs, like black mage, white mage, dragoon, thief, and more. As characters level up, more jobs and abilities become available, making combat customization rewardingly robust.

Final Fantasy Tactics – The Ivalice Chronicles launches on the PlayStation 5 and 4, Nintendo Switch 1 and 2, Xbox Series X|S, and Steam. Preordering is available now, including preorders for a special collector’s box set that comes with a Ramza Beoulve Figure, an art sheet set, chocobo mini plushies, and more. Note that, at the time of writing, the page for collector's box set preorders is currently down.
