Hideo Kojima reveals Physint timeline in interview with Le Film Français magazine

Physint, Hideo Kojima’s upcoming action espionage IP, is still “five or six years” out, according to the acclaimed video game developer in an interview with Le Film Français magazine. Kojima shared a video of the printed interview, which was then captured and translated by user Red Kong XIX on ResetEra and then reported on by Video Game Chronicle.

The broad time window was revealed when Kojima, an avid movie lover,  was asked about the Death Stranding movie being developed by A24 Films and his general interest in directing his own film.

“Oh yes! I've had so many offers since I left Konami, with serious conditions to develop games in my independent studio. Besides Death Stranding 2, there's also Physint in development. That will take me another five or six years. But maybe after that, I could finally decide to take on a film.”

Physint will mark Kojima’s anticipated return to action espionage, a genre he pioneered with his successful creation of the Metal Gear Solid series.

The all-new IP was first announced in a State of Play presentation in January 2024. During the announcement, Kojima details that production of Physint would begin after the release of Death Stranding 2, which is due out June 26, 2025. The expectations for his return to the genre he helped popularize are high based on his own words.

“Two years from now, I will celebrate the 40th anniversary of my game production career,” Kojima said in the original announcement. “I am confident that this will be the culmination of my work.”

He also provided a look into the game and Physint’s unique marrying of the film and video game mediums.

“I cannot tell you so much now, but we plan to bring together cutting-edge technology and talent around the world to create it. Of course, it is an interactive game, but it is also a movie at the same time, in terms of look, story, theme, cast, acting, fashion, and sound. With this title, we hope to transcend the barriers between film and video games.”

Stay tuned for more on Physint, Death Stranding 2, and OD, Kojima Productions’ upcoming horror game being made in collaboration with Xbox Game Studios and filmmaker Jordan Peele.
